Nobel Laureate Mourns Passing of Nasserist Leader Hatem Abu Hatem
Human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Major General Pilot Engineer Hatem Ali Hadi Abu Hatem, a prominent Nasserist leader and national figure, who passed away on Saturday in the capital, Sana'a, following a prolonged illness. He was 80.
Abu Hatem’s passing marks the end of a long public career devoted to national service, the defense of the republic, and the advancement of Arab nationalist ideals.
In a statement published on her official Facebook page, Karman described the late Abu Hatem as one of the foremost political and military figures in modern Yemeni history, whose legacy remains closely intertwined with the country’s defining national moments.
She said Abu Hatem embodied political steadfastness and steadfast nationalist convictions, dedicating his life to the principles of freedom, unity, and the republican system.
Karman added that Yemen, with his passing, has lost one of its most sincere and devoted patriots — a statesman who remained faithful to the people’s causes and the nation’s aspirations until his final days.
She extended her condolences to his family, colleagues, supporters, and to the Yemeni people at large, calling for the preservation of the values and principles for which he stood throughout his life.
Karman concluded her tribute by honoring Abu Hatem’s distinguished national legacy and long record of public service with “deep respect and reverence.”
