Karman: Syria’s Transitional Council Draws Legitimacy from the Revolution, Not the Ballot Box
Nobel Peace Prize laureate and prominent human rights defender Tawakkol Karman described Syria’s People’s Council elections as symbolic rather than genuinely competitive, emphasizing that the body should be seen as a transitional legislative authority.
In a post on her official account on X (formerly Twitter), Karman asserted that the council should be viewed as a transitional legislative body, deriving its legitimacy from the revolution itself rather than from electoral procedures.
She stressed that the defining feature of this transitional phase must be the guarantee of unrestricted freedoms—particularly freedom of expression and political organization. According to Karman, these liberties are already broadly accessible, laying the groundwork for the next stage of Syria’s political journey.
Karman concluded by affirming that she still feels deep joy over the victory of the Syrian revolution.
