Nobel laureate congratulates Palestine on securing official UN seat
Prominent human rights advocate and Nobel laureate, Tawakkol Karman, has congratulated Palestine on its recent achievement of obtaining an official seat in the United Nations.
In a statement on her official Facebook page, Karman expressed her joy, saying, "Palestine obtains an official seat in the United Nations, congratulations."
Karman emphasized that while this milestone is significant, the restoration of occupied lands and the return of displaced people remain paramount goals. "These will happen," she affirmed.
Palestine's official seat at the UN marks a historic moment, as it was granted during the opening session of the United Nations General Assembly last Tuesday in New York.
Palestine's journey to this point has been long and complex. The territory applied for full membership in the United Nations in 2011 but faced challenges in securing the necessary backing from the Security Council due to an American veto. However, in 2012, Palestine achieved "permanent observer status," paving the way for this latest development.
The 79th session of the UN General Assembly commenced with representatives from Palestine present. The Palestinian Authority's envoy to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, was officially seated at a table marked "State of Palestine," positioned between representatives from Sri Lanka and Sudan.
This landmark recognition highlights ongoing global support for Palestinian statehood and underscores the continuing quest for justice and rights within the international arena.
