The human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laurate, Tawakkol Karman, is scheduled to participate in the Fifth International Conference on Women and Peace in Seoul.
This event, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea, is slated for November 30, 2023, in the South Korean capital.
Known for her relentless advocacy for women's rights and their involvement in peacemaking, Karman will deliver a keynote address at the conference. She will share insights from her prolonged activism, focusing on empowering women in conflict zones and engaging them in initiatives for peace.
Part of the "Peace with Women Initiative" initiated by the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the conference aims to enhance global cooperation in the women, peace, and security agenda. Themed "Advancing the women, peace, and security agenda in the Security Council," the event seeks to facilitate in-depth discussions on effective strategies for safeguarding women in conflict and promoting their active participation in peace-related activities.
The South Korean Foreign Ministry emphasized the conference's significance, especially in anticipation of Korea's upcoming non-permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council. It provides an opportunity for the government to showcase its dedication to the women, peace, and security agenda and generate global interest in the cause.
Prominent figures from governments, international organizations, community groups, and influential leaders will converge at the conference. South Korea's aim in hosting this gathering is to raise awareness and garner support for advancing women's rights and promoting peace on a global scale.
